Whether you are just starting your first social business, wanting to expand an existing business, or you’re a seasoned entrepreneur looking for fresh ideas, it is easy to become overwhelmed with all the things that have to be learned and accomplished. So here is a step-by-step guide for how to start and grow a successful social enterprise. No matter where you are coming from, follow the steps. They are there for a reason – THEY WORK!

2Prove yourself

“The Universe” (Personally I prefer the word God, but use whatever you prefer; Universe, Allah, Yahweh …. ) won’t be able to trust you with more money until you prove you can responsibly handle what you already have. So if you are not already living on less than you make, then that is your first order of business. Order, read, re-read, and implement Dave Ramsey’s The Total Money Makeover: A Proven Plan for Financial Fitnessthen proceed with step three.

3Pick a mission

What need do you see that gets you excited about helping? If you never had to worry about money again, how would you bring meaning to your life? What project could you work on that would make you excited to get out of bed every morning? That just might be your mission!!!

The perfect business will be one that satisfies all 5 of your basic needs.  Certainly it needs to be one that the market has a real demand for, and our panel of experts will help you identify what that is (It will probably pretty tough to survive selling rain coats in the Sahara).  It also needs to be one that will satisfy your need for fun, that makes you feel like you’re doing something that really matters, giving you a sense of purpose and belonging.  And finally, it needs to be a business that gives you the freedom to do what you want, when you want.

4Get educated

Running a business does not need to be complicated.  However, unless you were fortunate enough to have been raised in a successful entrepreneurial family, then everything you think you know about running a business is probably wrong.  In my newsletter, Living Well, you will find tons of great tips from some of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs.  And it’s all free!

And in our book store you will find what we consider the core essentials, key books that every social entrepreneur must not only have in their library, but must actually have read and integrated into their life.

Reading, learning, and self-improvement are not an option.  You only see what you know.  The more you know, the more you will see.

5Get money

Now that you know what your mission is and you’ve got a preliminary business plan in mind, you’re going to need some start-up capital.  Depending on where you are at in the process, this could be anywhere from a couple hundred to a couple hundred thousand dollars.

Let’s imagine for a moment that you have no money, no job, and no credit.  Can you start a social enterprise?  Absolutely!  It’s specifically with you in mind that we offer our SPINNERS® program.  With this program you can start with absolutely nothing, and within just one month be making hundreds or even thousands of dollars!

Then once you’ve got some money saved, either from the Spinners program or from your current job, you’re ready to take it to the next level.  And the absolutely least expensive way to start a business is online; you don’t need any equipment other than a simple computer (or go to your local library, and you wont even need that!), no employees, not even a product to sell!  If this sounds good to you, go to Step 6.

If on the other hand you’re business is going to need some significant capital to get started, say for equipment or inventory, you have two basic choices – find a partner with money, or borrow the money.  Obviously, if you can avoid the debt by taking on a partner, then by all means do it!

But if earning the money and taking on a partner are not good options for you and you want to proceed by borrowing the capital you need, then please be sure you do it right.  Never  ever put yourself or your family at risk by personally guaranteeing a loan!!! You don’t need to, and it’s just not worth the stress.

Now obviously you can’t just go down to your neighborhood bank and get an unsecured loan.  And if you ask, they’ll tell you that those don’t even exist.  Well they’re flat out wrong, but what would you expect them to say anyway?  To learn how anyone can get a loan for hundreds of thousands of dollars – with no personal guarantee – check out our Business Credit Developement.  They are the best in the business, endorsed by industry leaders like Micheal Gerber, author of The E-Myth, and have the best program for getting unsecured loans I have ever seen.

James Martell's Affiliate Marketers Super Boot Camp

OK, this is what it’s all about.  A real business, generating real money, making a real difference in your world!  Now whatever business you choose to go into, success in today’s economy will require a very effective presence on the web; not an internet “brochure”, but a real functioning “money magnet”. Although specifically designed for selling OPS (“other people’s stuff”, e.g., affiliate marketing), I’ve found the information and techniques James Martell teaches to be equally effective for selling my own stuff – products as well as services. He has a Bootcamp which I’ve attended and highly recommend. In fact, it is his system that I’ve used to create this very website, as well as others that I have. I have literally spent tens of thousands of dollars on my internet education, and I can honestly say that no one does a better job of giving you an honest and practical way of building an online business.  In his program he will show you –

  • How to pick the “right ” business for you and your mission
  • How to do simple but effective market research
  • How to easily design a winning website
  • How to affordably get the right prospects to your website
  • How to create so much value, your prospects just can’t resist becoming customers!

If you are serious about becoming a philanthropic entrepreneur, then you owe it to yourself to check James out.

7Protect your business

Finally, once your business is making money, you need to protect it.  The last thing you want to do is to build a business that is allowing you to help hundreds of others, and then loose it all do to death, taxes, lawsuits, illness, or identity theft!  With the right legal structure, you won’t need to fear any of these.

Some have asked why we don’t place this step earlier in the process.  The answer is simple; you don’t need protection until you have something to protect.  That being said, this is a step that absolutely must not be skipped.  The problem though is that this is a specialized area that only a few very elite, and very expensive, attorneys know how to do right.

Fortunately for you, once again I’ve done the research for you, weeded out the frauds and blow-hards, and located a legal genius who can show you exactly what to do and how to do it to protect your business and your charity.  His name is Lee Phillips.  If you follow Lee’s advice, you will not only save tens of thousands of dollars on legal fees, but also potentially save hundreds of thousand of dollars of needless loss.  Do yourself and your charity a huge favor and get Lee’s program now!
